The internet guide for the classic route via the Balkans
Sila Yolu: Staying Online Cheaply on the Drive to Turkey
Key takeaways
- On the classic route (DE–AT–HU/HR–RS–BG–TR), EU roaming does NOT apply in Serbia or Turkey
- Unprepared, you'll pay €6–15 per roaming day pass in Serbia and Turkey — or per-MB rates
- Simplest fix: a Turkey eSIM for the stay (from €2.20) plus a small Serbia eSIM for transit (from €2.90)
- Install everything on Wi-Fi before departure — plans only activate on arrival in each country
The route and its roaming traps
Until Hungary or Croatia you're covered by EU roaming. From the Serbian border it gets expensive: Serbia is a third country, with standard roaming at several euros per MB or €6–15 day passes.
Turkey is the same: no EU roaming, pricey day passes — for your entire holiday. Stay three or four weeks and home-plan passes quickly reach triple digits. Bulgaria in between is EU and uncritical.
The right eSIM strategy
Cheapest for most families: one Turkey eSIM for the stay plus a small Serbia eSIM for the transit day. Together they often cost less than a single roaming day pass.
For maximum convenience, take a multi-country eSIM covering the whole route instead — one profile, no switching at borders. SimBalkan offers a Homebound bundle for exactly this; for Balkan-only detours there's the regional bundle with 11 countries including Turkey.
Example calculation
Two adults, three weeks in Turkey, transit via Serbia both ways: with home-carrier day passes many end up at €80–200. With eSIMs: Turkey 10 GB at €9.90 per person plus Serbia 1 GB at €2.90 — under €26 for both, saving well over 80%.
Netflix for the kids on the back seat? Take the Turkey unlimited option from €2.64/day — and still download the playlist on hotel Wi-Fi first.
Sila Yolu checklist
- Buy eSIMs 1–2 days before departure and install at home on Wi-Fi
- Disable data roaming on your home SIM from the Serbian border — the eSIM takes over
- Download offline maps for Serbia/Bulgaria (border queues!)
- At each border: switch mobile data to the local eSIM and enable its data roaming — no extra cost
- Return trip: leftover Serbia data stays valid until the plan expires
Verdict
The Sila Yolu is plannable: two small eSIMs (or one Homebound bundle) replace all roaming passes, cost less than a motorway dinner combined, and take ten minutes to set up. İyi yolculuklar!
