One eSIM per country: the cheapest strategy
Regional multi-country bundles sound convenient but are almost always significantly more expensive per GB than single-country plans. For a typical 2–4 country route, one eSIM per country is the cheapest way — especially since each plan only starts counting when you arrive in that country.
Modern smartphones happily store 5–10 eSIM profiles at once. Install all your eSIMs at home on Wi-Fi and activate only the one you currently need.
What happens at the border?
When crossing a border you simply switch to the new country's eSIM in your settings — it takes ten seconds. Leave the old eSIM disabled; its remaining data stays valid until expiry in case you come back.
Important: enable data roaming only for the active travel eSIM and disable it for your home SIM — that prevents accidental roaming charges on your main card.
Classic route: Croatia → Bosnia → Montenegro → Albania → Greece
For Croatia and Greece your home plan's EU roaming may be enough. For Bosnia, Montenegro and Albania an eSIM is practically always worth it — EU roaming doesn't apply there and home-carrier day passes are expensive.

Pre-departure checklist
- Check eSIM compatibility (*#06# → EID shown?) and that your device is unlocked
- Buy eSIMs for all non-EU countries on your route and install them at home on Wi-Fi
- Disable data roaming on your home SIM
- Save the QR emails offline (screenshot) — as a backup without internet
